Breathe new life into your garden this Spring
Spring is well and truly here and there’s no better time to give your garden a refresh. Whether you’ve got big plans for a backyard transformation or just want to make a few improvements, now is the time to roll up your sleeves. Our Landscape Designer, Cameron Fordred, shares top tips to help you turn your outdoor space into a lush and vibrant oasis that’s ready to impress.
Start strong with smart planting
According to Cameron, the warmer soil and extra daylight make spring the ideal time to introduce new plants to your garden.
“Begin by clearing out any lingering weeds or overgrown area, think of it as a fresh canvas. Pay attention to where the sun hits different parts of your space and plan accordingly. From full sun, part shade or sheltered spots, all have their unique plant needs. Make a trip to your local nursery, where a horticulturist can help you pick out the perfect plants to match your vision and conditions.”

Lawn envy, here we come
“Everyone loves that vibrant and freshly-cut look (and aroma) for their lawn, but achieving it requires a little preparation. Here’s how to get that picture-perfect grass.”
· Clear away leaves, branches and any debris.
· Use a garden fork or aerator to create channels for air, water and nutrients to reach the roots.
· Apply a targeted herbicide to tackle pesky weeds early on.
· Follow up with a high-quality lawn fertiliser a few weeks later.
· Fix any bare patches with a sprinkle of topsoil and a scattering of lawn seeds.
· Make sure your irrigation system is in top shape, so your grass gets consistent hydration.
· Regular mowing and edging will keep your lawn looking sharp and tidy.
Give your garden a power-up
Camerons says that a good feed is just what your plants need to thrive this spring. Start with a slow-release granular fertiliser for garden beds and potted plants, giving them a steady supply of nutrients.
“For your lawn, a liquid fertiliser will quickly give it that extra lift it needs to grow strong. And for a final boost, a splash of Seasol can help your garden thrive from the roots up, ensuring everything stays healthy and vibrant as the season unfolds.”
Keep pests at bay
With new growth, comes the risk of unwanted visitors - those sneaky pests. Spring is when many insects and plant diseases make their comeback, so keep an eye on your garden. Focus especially on newly planted areas, which are most vulnerable during their early growth stages.
“Spotting pests early is the key to managing them effectively. Visit your local garden centre for advice on the best treatments to keep your garden pest-free and thriving.” Cameron says.
Polish up your outdoor spaces
“Your garden is ready to shine, so now let’s make sure the rest of your outdoor area matches. Spring is also a great time to refresh your decks, pavers and outdoor entertaining areas. Give timber decks a fresh coat of stain to protect them from the elements, power wash your paving for a spotless finish and ensure gates and locks are secure to keep your space safe. A little effort now will have your backyard looking its best for those sunny gatherings and relaxing afternoons.”
